Despite sexuality having been depicted in diverse cultures throughout the ages, pornography is essentially a term of the modern Western world shaped by outmoded legal prohibitions that served to protect morality. In this study, Anja Schmidt shows how criminal law on pornography should be designed to ensure sexual autonomy. Emphasising that German criminal law has so far provided inadequate protection against image-based sexual abuse, she develops a timelier set of legal policy proposals.
