Commemoration of fallen Japanese soldiers is among the most controversial issues in international relations in the Far East. This work analyzes the history of the political cult of the dead in Japan since the mid-19th century and examines the major similarities and differences between Japanese commemorative practices for fallen soldiers and those of Western nations.
